PULSERA: The Indie Tribe
PULSERA is an indie-band formed in 2008. From the original lineup, only Omar (vox) and Marc (lead guit) remained. Nevertheless, the years of changing lineups and polishing songs enabled the band to fully distinguish and establish its real sound.
Ah, they say the golden age of music is bestowed upon this generation. Anything and everything can happen, all because technology makes it all the easier so.
“Indie” is what it is rightfully called – whether it’s music, visual arts or fashion.
It's funny, though, how when you think about it, only a certain number of people have the monopoly of what is cool, what is tasteful, what is good music. It's like a snooty guitarist defining for the rest of the aspiring lot what a "warm" guitar tone should sound like. Yet the definition is non-quantifiable. One cannot, for the love of all things good and tasteful, even singularly describe what guitar warmth is. It’s simple enough because there is no universally accepted template. It boils down to subjective preference; but it’s THEIR subjective preference. Lest the rest of the businesses fail. Lest the music kingmakers fail.
What's even funnier is that at this day and age – where almost everything can be produced DIY, where all you need is a decent work station, a pirated DAW software, a whole lot of patience and creativity – there lurks the same mentality. Except they, too, call themselves indie. But, it’s independence with the same snootiness and the arrogance of a kingmaker; only with the guise of "helping out" fellow independents. Probably rejects or wannabes of the ones before them.
While the rest of us, we just play like there's no tomorrow.
PULSERA will be playing at Freedom Bar on May 8 and 11. For updates on their gig schedules, like them on Facebook.

This year, PULSERA actively participates in the indie music scene through gigs.

PULSERA on their TOEs
When PULSERA's vocalist OMAR saw the poll in Facebook about TOE's possible concert in Manila, he signed up right away. A month after, tickets became available and, as excited as little kids, the band bought theirs at an early bird rate.
The experience inside the NBC Tent was as surreal as it could get. The show started with local bands, Sleepwalk Circus and Encounters with a Yeti, who played the part in working up to the crowd’s cheers and anticipation. The two front acts were real indications that the night was gonna be filled with great music.
You know for sure that people were excited to see TOE live when even during a sound check, the audience was already screaming. Lucky for the Japanese PA who got his 15-minute of glory before the band actually started playing.
When TOE finally hit the stage - after what felt like an agonizing 10 minutes of lag time - the crowd erupted in cheers and went wild as expected. Throughout the set, the band showcased their brand of musical expertise. Every song was played with clockwork precision, of tensions and release, borne only from years of playing together and hitting the right formula for transcendent music. And in each song, the band ran high on emotions, a signature of theirs on live sets. To say that they were amazing is a total understatement. With how both the cohesive, unparalleled notes and progressions were played, TOE delivered, giving the Filipino audience what they came for.

PULSERA gets its inspiration from various bands with different genres. From alternative rock to post-rock/math rock, as played by TOE, it all serves as inspiration to the band in creating good and fresh music.

PULSERA: Musings on music and emotion
More often, people find themselves swarming with all sorts of questions about various things. Just recently, PULSERA talked about emotion and music, and then along the conversation came a potential artistic argument that has yet to be supported by facts, "art can exist without emotion."
Art can be described in several ways: a study of creative skill, a process of using the creative skill, a product of the creative skills, or the audience's experience with the creative skills. When something is driven by creativity, can human emotion be detached to it? First and foremost, what drives creativity?
How do people come up with an artwork? Whether be it music, painting, poem, it is surely inspired by something.
PULSERA continues its pursuit of creating music based on artistry and never for commercial viability.
An art is the personification of thoughts and emotions, using personal experience, witnessed event that lead to empathy or sympathy, as its possible sources. In fact, this goes not only to people who are doing the art, but even those who are appreciating it. It is said that the common response in viewing artwork is the sense that the space in a work has meaning, both because it meant something to the artist, and because it means something to the viewer, who takes the time to look at it and respond to it. The response of finding meaning is never without emotion.
So to say that art can be created without the slightest hint of emotion is an absurd idea, probably said by someone who cannot detect the connection or is in some emotional turmoil that leads to denial of sort.
